Angeline, you are a mystery to me. You are mentioned on the 1900 Census along with James Harvey and son Perry with all his siblings. For some reason the researcher says your relationship to head of household was "Mother," but mother of whom? Harriet Brush is the mother of all those kids! What are you doing there?

Mom says I need to get a life, but I say Angeline wants her memory to live on!

RootsWeb WorldConnect Project

After a lot of looking around, I have decided to continue to use the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project to display the contents of our Gedcom file. On the downside, it's not very asthetically pleasing, as I can't control the color scheme to make it match our site. But the bigger problem for me is that when you're searching and navigating the site, the information you're looking for from our Gedcom is displayed somewhere below the middle of the page, not in a spot your eye would normally go to. It always takes me a beat to pick out the information I'm looking for. If you're having problems finding what you need, hopefully the screen shot above left here will help you.

On the upside, RootsWeb allows me to put our Gedcom file up very easily and make it searchable and easy to navigate (once you know where to look on the page). And the best thing is that you and I both may add "Post-Ems." Those are little notes attached to a given person's page. I am going to use those to point to documents on our site and hopefully tie everything together a little better. I hope we can put these Post-Ems to good use!

By the way, anyone can post a Post-Em. It says "password" at the bottom of the form, but you only need to enter a password if you want to have the ability to go back and edit what you've written. What that box is doing is prompting you for a password, so there's no right or wrong answer there. I suggest you enter something simple like "hello." This is not something that requires much security.

Mary Cowden

Mary Margaret Trimble Cowden, 85, of Bloomington died at 2:10 a.m. Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

There will be a private family graveside inurnment service, the Rev. Fred Belcher officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Beck Memorial Home, Bloomington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to LeRoy Ambluance or McLean County Humane Society.

She was born Jan. 7, 1915. She married Howard Cowden in 1945. He died Sept. 5, 1973.

Survivors include one sister, Minna Sammons, LeRoy.

Other survivors include a nephew, Richard (Diane) Trimble, LeRoy; a niece, Ruth C. Eickenberg, Bloomington; a special friend, Susan Thoennes, Bloomington; and many nieces and nephews.

Two brothers preceded her in death.

Mrs. Cowden was a retired township supervisor for McLean County Township.

She was a member of McLean County Horseman's Association. She enjoyed her family, friends, and her farm.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, on Jan. 14, 1996.

Mrs. Sammons was a member of St. James Methodist Church of Chicago and was a retired nurse.

Charles P. Trimble, 69, of Lexington, S.C., who was reared in Bloomington, died Monday (May 21, 1990) in Columbia, S.C.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church, Cayce, S.C., and at 11 a.m. Friday at Leasure Funeral Home, Ridge Farm, Ill., the Rev. Lloyd King officiating.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Wood Lawn Cemetery, Indianola.

Mr. Trimble was born Aug. 26, 1920 in Winchester, Ky., a son of Prewitt and Anna McCord Trimble. He married Irene Boggess of Ridge Farm. She died in 1979. He later married Libby Morris. She survives in Lexington, S.C.

Other survivors include one daughter, Susan Griffin, Winter Haven, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Brenda Grist, West Columbia, S.C., and Vicki Gibson, Simpsonville, S.C.; a son, Gregg Trimble, Swansea, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Margaret Cowden, R.R. 1, Bloomington, and Minna Sammons, LeRoy; and six grandchildren.

He had worked for Jacob Manufacturing Plant in Danville, and owned his own manufacturing company in Columbia. He was a graduate of Bloomington High School.

Mr. Trimble was a member of the Ridge Farm Masonic Lodge. Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, Cayce, S.C.

Virtual Cemetery & TFA Update

Although I really like the idea of Find A Grave's virtual cemetery, their list of names format doesn't entirely satisfy my desire to make "real people" out of the pages and pages of documentation my mother has acquired over the course of her research.

So a new addition to this site is the virtual cemetery, with green grass and flowers and singing birds and the whole nine yards. Links from the "headstones" will take you to the appropriate Find a Grave memorial page, where you may read up on the person, see what pictures there are, and even leave flowers and a note if you so desire.

By the way, I am currently having some trouble with my court reporting software, so I haven't been able to do any Trimble Families of America updates recently. As soon as the software is back online, I will get back to that project, probably sometime after the holidays.

UPDATE: Okay, after looking over the first virtual cemetery, I decided it was really, well, hokey. So I did another one, this time using CSS and some tips from Mandarin. Ahh, much better. Oh, and Mom made me get rid of all the bird racket.

In the light of morning, I see that I have made an error regarding the location of those cemetery plots. They are all located at the Winchester Cemetery (on Lexington Road, about 1/2 mile up the road from Scobee Funeral Home). I know this from Mr. Starns' excellent work posted here.

Also at the above link is a scan of the nice diagram made by the researcher. So putting together what the researcher says and what appears in the picture, I can almost make out that entire line of graves.

Hello All. Thank you so much for all of your feedback and interest concerning my late grandfather's book, Trimble Families of America. Unfortunately, it seems there are no additional copies in print other than what has already been sold. The original manuscript was destroyed in a fire at the printers' office several years ago, so there is no way for a reprinting. My father and I are considering a project to scan the book in and post it as an Adobe Acrobat file, free for perusal. The advantage would be that the entire text would be searchable. The disadvantage would be that this is extremely time-consuming. If there are any volunteers out there, please come forward....

Trimble Families of America has been updated today to now include the entirety of Section I: Historical Background. Also, rather than posting the entire text directly on this blog, I've posted it in its own place so that it is easier for me to format and upload directly via my court reporting software, plus the white background is easier to read when you're dealing with large documents. This first section was very interesting to read. It dealt more with the role of religion and education in early America than specifically the Trimble genealogy. The next section, "Five Brothers," will get more into the meat of how the Trimbles came to America and what happened to them and their descendants. Enjoy. :)

Trimble Families of America: Section I: Historical Background

My mother tells me that she saw a post by John Farley Trimble's descendents where they have indicated that they would support his book, "Trimble Families of America," being typed into a searchable format, available to everyone at no charge. As I am a court reporter and can type it fairly rapidly on my steno machine, I have decided to type it up while I read so that others may benefit from Mr. Trimble's prodigious research. Hopefully I can find John Farley Trimble's descendents online myself soon just to double-check that this is okay. If they ask me to remove it, of course I will; however, in reading this wonderful book, it seems obvious to me that John Farley Trimble would love having his book online and brought into the 21st Century. Hopefully the Trimble kids will see it that way as well.

I will post a little bit each day or so until it's complete, and then I will upload the entire book as a single document for download. I have taken the liberty to correct the very few typographical and punctuation errors I have encountered, and of course all of the hypertext links are my own. I hope this transcription is of help to others in their geneological research.

TRIMBLE FAMILIES OF AMERICA -- BY JOHN FARLEY TRIMBLE

Too Many David Trimbles

There are no less than four David Trimbles in the family, so for my own sanity I'm going to make a few notes here as to who is who. I believe I have the two middle Davids' information switched in the family tree entry I made earlier today.

The first David Trimble is the furthest generation we go back, ten generations ahead of me. This is the David Trimble listed at the top of the Bellware tree. The other David Trimbles might be on that tree too somewhere, but as of this writing I have yet to decipher them.

DAVID TRIMBLE was born Abt. 1740 in Armagh, Ireland, and died in Bourbon, KY, USA. He married HOUSTON Abt. 1760 in KY, USA.

The second David Trimble is the son of the first.

DAVID TRIMBLE, b. 1760, VA, USA; d. Abt. 1827, Montgomery County, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, USA.

I wonder if is this David Trimble referred to in the Swango papers, although this David I believe would have been the uncle of his grandfather, not cousin, so I could be wrong:

There was a David Trimble, who was said to be a cousin of my grandfather, who lived and died in Greenup County, Kentucky, when I was a youth, was a distinguished lawyer, and represented that district in congress for several years, and was engaged extensively in the manufacture of iron.

The third David Trimble is the son of James Trimble (the second David Trimble above is his uncle)

DAVID TRIMBLE was born 1825 and died 1886.

AND I believe -- and I could be wrong! -- that this is the David Trimble mentioned in the Swango papers. This, I think, is the David Trimble who married Lucy Lacy:

My grandfather's name was David Trimble. He was born in the state of Virginia, and there is a tradition that he was a son of one of five brothers who imigrated to America from England in the early part of the eighteenth century, all coming over the ocean together, and located for the time being in different parts of the state of Virginia, after which they scattered out to other states. One family going to Ohio, some to Kentucky, and others to the different southern states. My grandfather married Miss Lacey in Greenbriar County, Virginia, where they lived for several years, and in the fall of 1797 they immigrated to Kentucky and settled in Montgomery County, about six miles south of Mt. Sterling, where they continued to live until their death. My grandfather was born between 1740 and 45 and died about 1828. He was eighty odd years of age when he died. I never saw him, but I remember when my father attended his funeral, when I was about five or six years old. He had born to him and his wife ten children, five sons and five daughters, named as follows -- William (who was my father), Isaac, John, Mark, and David -- Elizabeth, Nancy, Polly, Jane, and Lucinda. All are now dead.

And the fourth David Trimble was the son of the David Trimble above. I don't believe I have any further information on him.

The above named soldier was residing in the County of Montgomery in the State of Kentucky when he applied for a pension on the date of December 4 of the year 1843 while he was at the age of 80 years. He stated that he was born in the County of Loudoun in the State of Virginia on the date of May 7 of the year 1763. He further added that he had enlisted in the County of Hampshire in the State of Virginia in the year 1784.

He also stated that prior to the opening of the War of the Revolution he had resided in Loudoun County in the State of Virginia, and also in Hampshire County in the State of Virginia. He also stated that since the close of the War of the Revolution he had resided in Montgomery County in the State of Kentucky.

The said soldier, George Yocum, stated that he had removed to the State of Kentucky in the year 1802 from the State of Virginia and the County of Hampshire.

The application for a pension was rejected.

I would suggest to you that you write to him in preparing a history of the Trimble family and request him to give you a history of his branch of the family. I suppose you are aware that my father served as a volunteer in the war of 1812. William Warfield of Lexington was his captain, and Richard Johnson of Georgetown (?), Ky. was his colonel. He was honorably discharged and for his services he received a land warrant. I prepared his papers for that purpose. Col. Johns was afterward Vice-President of the United States during Andrew Jackson's administration.

I have always understood that your great-great-grandfather Swango was also in the war of 1812.

My uncle Wm. Lacey during his life informed me that he was aquainted with John and James Trimble, who were brothers and came from Virginia. They were both lawyers and practiced their profession in this county during the early part of the last century, and John was known as Judge Trimble and he thought he was a member of the app (appellate?) bench. James was then living in this town and was a good lawyer. I am aquainted with Charles Trimble of Memphis, Tenn., who is an emminent lawyer and gets a good practice. He makes a specialty of railroad cases, in which he gets large fees. He is a descendent of the Virginia families.

I have prepared this very briefly and trusting that you may find some thoughts herein, that may interest and be of advantage to you in the work you have before you.

Thomas Trimble, who came from Virginia and settled on a fine blue grass farm on the Owingsville pike, five miles from Mt. Sterling, was a cousin to my father. He had three children. One son, Frank, and two daughters, Margurate (?) and Elizabeth. Frank frequently visited our home at Hazel Green. He married Miss Thompson and lived in this county until after the war, then moved to Texas, leaving two married daughters here, who married Mr. Vanarsdal and A (?) Byra. I boarded with cousin Thomas during the winter 1838-9 and went to school to Peter Guerant. Your grandfather Swango attended the school the same winter and the Maysville pike, six miles from Mt. Sterling, and boared (?) at J Hughes, who had married a distant relative of the Swangos. I went over one Saturday and stayed over night with your grandfather in February 1839. We attended Somorsot Church next day, and heard old Raccoon John Smith preach.

My father had another cousin, who came from Virginia and settled on a farm near North Middletown. His name was Foggy Trimble. He had two sons, John and William -- John is dead. William lived in this town several years since I have been here. He had only one daughter. She married Judge McKee of our city. She is now dead, leaving two grown sons. One of them named Trimble McKee. William is living in Lexington and is a widower.

Green Trimble, a lawyer by profession, is living at Somersot, in Pulaski County, Ky. I have never met him and I know nothing about his history. He is represented as being man of considerable ability. He is a republican and commanded a...

Elizabeth, another daughter, married Andrew B. Nickell, a brother to Joe, who reared a large family. Holloway Power married another daughter and moved to Alabama. I was intimately acquainted with all the parties alluded to herein, including all Johny Lacey, James and Caleb Kash, who were all much older than my father, who was born on the 12th day of January 1787.

I have traveled in about one-half the states of this union and have frequently met with persons of my name, and in speaking of their genealogy, many of them would refer back to the five brothers as ancestors who came to America in the early part of the eighteenth century. The Trimble family, so far as my knowledge extends, is noted for the number of lawyers, judges, and politicians it produces, though I never heard of a lawyer of that name who descended from my branch of the family, neither did I over hear of one being a doctor, and only two preachers, one, a cousin in the city of Louisville, the other, my son Bruce, who does not follow it as a profession. There was a David Trimble, who was said to be a cousin of my grandfather, who lived and died in Greenup County, Kentucky, when I was a youth, was a distinguished lawyer, and represented that district in congress for several years, and was engaged extensively in the manufacture of iron.

Lawrence Trimble, a distingushed lawyer and democratic representated his district in Congress for several years. He was a very large man, weighing perhaps over 300 lbs., and was never married, and posessed considerable wealth, but made the most of it by engaging in railroad enterprises. He was the first pioneer what ever lived upon that creek and the creek took its name from him. He married a Miss Porter before he came to Kentucky and they reared eight children, two daughters and six sons.

One of the daughters, Nancy, married Johnson Morgan, and the other one, Polly, a maiden lady, committed suicide by shooting herself in the forehead with a rifle gun. I attended her funeral.

His sons were named William, who married my Aunt Sibloy O'Hair, to whom I have alluded in a former letter. Alexander, who married Miss Francis Nickoll (a sister to Preacher Joo) Moses B. died an old bachelor, as so did Harry, neither of them ever having married. Henry was drowned in the Kentucky river.

Harvery (Harvey?) married Miss Sally Little, sister to the two proachers (preachers?), Charles and Harrison, and raised a large family of sons and daughters. Mark Married Miss Sally Huff, who came from Virginia, and they had one daughter, named Nancy and the following sons -- Perry, Andrew, Portor, James, Alexandre, and Sanford.

I do not know the name of one of my grandmother's sisters who came from Virginia. She married Isaac Lykins, and settled on the Johnson fork of Liking River, now in Magoffin County. They raised the following sons, Eli, William, John and Isaac, also Maroas (?), and one daughter, who married Isaac Williams.

The other sister was named Phobe (Phoba?). She married James Kash, Sr., and raised a large family of sons and daughters including Calob Esq., Levi, William and James. One of the daughters, Rachel, married Jooph (Joseph?) Nickell, a minister of the Christian Church, who has performed more marriages and baptized more converts...

Elizabeth, the eldest of the daughters married Cobb Hash, Sr. (???)(Kavh? written?) and located on Red River - now Daysborough - where he and his wife died leaving six daughters and no son - named as follows - Rachel, who married Spaniard Andy Nickoll - Nancy, who married Stewart Nickell - Rebecca, married Shelby Wilson - Polly, married Joseph (?) Wilson - Elizabeth (called Betty) married, first to Wm. Furgueon (Furgueson?), second to Milton Lykino, a Babtist poacher (Baptist preacher?), and Lucy, married Archibald Stewart, a Minister of the Babtist church. They moved and located at St. Joseph, Mo., when that was a small village.

Nancy married Wm. Carter. They had a daughter Polly, who married John B. Nagovan(?). They had no children, and all died in this county.

Polly married John Stephens and had seven children, five sons and two daughters, named as follows - David, Jackson, Preston, John and Howard (?). All with their parents died in this county. Jano (John?) married Jo Johns, and Polly married a Mr. Stephens, and move to Mo.

John and Jack were the only ones of the son (sons?) who were married. Lucinda married John Wymore, both died in this county, leaving a son named David and three daughters, who moved west and have not been heard from since. Jane (?) married Jacob Wagel, and moved to Clay County, Indiana, immediately after their marriage. I visited them on horse back in December 1845 and partook of their hospitality. Mrs. Wagel told me that I was the first relative she had seen since she left Kentucky. She lived on the road leaving from Terre Haute to Indianapolis.

Isaac married Miss Young and they had two sons and several daughters -- Sons were named B. Franklin, called Doc. -- he was asassinated during the war and was unmarried. Harvey the other son died the 9th of this month, age 89 years, leaving several sons and daughters. John died in this county several years ago, leaving four sons, as follows -- William, Richard Washington and David. They are all dead. Mark married Miss Choubert of this county and about ninety years ago moved to what is now Johnson County, this state, where he and his wife died, leaving two daughters and the following sons -- James, Jone (?), David, Lewis, and Williams, all dead, except William, living in Johnson County and David in Morgan County, age 91 years.

My uncle David had two wives, by his first wife, he had two sons and two daughters. His sons were unmarried and went to California by the Over Land route in 1849, and nothing heard from them since. His two daughters married two brothers, named Williams and Thomas Batts, in this county, and went to Jackson County, Mo. I visited them in 1855 and partook of their hospitality. I again visited them at Independence, Mo. ten years ago. All were then dead except on(e?) daughter. After the death of his first wife he married again. This was about 1829. He moved to and located at Van Buren in Arkansas Territory, before it was admitted as a state. By his second wife he had a son and daughter. At first glance, the following letter seems to belong in the Trimble or O'Hair files. Those families were related to the Swango family, and the history contained in this letter is of interest to all family members.

Mr. J.H. Swango,
Terre Haute, Ind.

Dear Sir:-

I wrote you a few days ago, giving you such information in reference to the genealogy of the O'Hair family as was in my possession. I will not (now?) undertake to tell you what I know of my branch of the Tramble (Trimble) family.

My grandfather's name was David Trimble. He was born in the state of Virginia, and there is a tradition that he was a son of one of five brothers who imigrated to America from England in the early part of the eighteenth century, all coming over the ocean together, and located for the time being in different parts of the state of Virginia, after which they scattered out to other states. One family going to Ohio, some to Kentucky, and others to the different southern states. My grandfather married Miss Lacey in Greenbriar County, Virginia, where they lived for several years, and in the fall of 1797 they immigrated to Kentucky and settled in Montgomery County, about six miles south of Mt. Sterling, where they continued to live until their death. My grandfather was born between 1740 and 45 and died about 1828. He was eighty odd years of age when he died. I never saw him, but I remember when...

Mom's researcher made heroic efforts in his quest to find JP!

* Perry is buried in the Winchester cemetery in lot #355 -- the Ramsey lot which is located in the central section. Perry's grave no. is #4.
* Stone about 1 foot high by 2 foot long with the following: Perry Trimble, 1857-1936.
* From the 1936 Record Book of Scobee & Bartlett Funeral Home in Winchester, Ky.

The owner was a very nice man. If I had not gone in person, he said they would not furnish the record. Since I made the trip it was important to him.

He tried to make a copy but he had to do it about 4 times to make sure you got all the information.
